Kerry Tillson

Kerry Tillson

Women In Bushcraft Founder

Kerry was introduced to the world of bushcraft and survival a number of years ago and following her retirement as a Police Officer, she took a short-term role as an assistant bushcraft instructor and lived in the woods for almost 3 months with her fellow instructors. During this time, her passion for the outdoors and for learning was re-ignited and Kerry vowed to start her outdoor learning journey. Upon her return to civilisation, Kerry actively looked for groups to engage with and embark on her journey. Kerry struggled to find women to share her passion with so set up the Facebook group ‘Women in Bushcraft’ with the aim of encouraging, educating and championing women in the world of Bushcraft, Survival and its related skills and crafts. The group continues to grow and now has members from across the globe. Kerry set up ‘Vixen Bushcraft’ on both Facebook and Instagram as a means to document her outdoor learning journey in the hope that others will follow her journey and be inspired to get outside and maybe embark on their own learning journey. She has now also set up a Vixen Bushcraft YouTube channel and will be filming her journey along the way. Kerryhas been an instructor with the UK Army Cadet Force for many years, where she teaches many military subjects that cross over into the world of bushcraft and survival.  Come and be part of ‘Conversations with…’  Kerry and other outdoorsey women to listen to stories and ask advice from our female panel on all things women and the outdoors.

His first 20 years as a cabinet maker, crafting bespoke furniture from a range of different hard and soft woods. Paul has been involved in the Historical Re-Enactment scene for many years and during his time in the hobby he found that the lack of availability and often extortionate cost of many of the items needed for various impressions meant that he had to learn how to make his own equipment and uniform items in Wool, Canvas, Wood and Leather. A long time student of Bushcraft and Survival techniques, Paul has a love of the outdoors and a passion for making things from the materials nature provides. In 2014 his frustration with routine and the never ending 9 to 5 led to him leaving his full time Cabinet making career and pursuing his dream of making Leatherwork and custom Bushcraft, Archery and Re-Enactment kit. He has squared the circle in the last few years by becoming not just a practitioner but also a teacher of the skills he has spent so long perfecting, running various courses in Firecraft, Archery, Foraging and Leathercraft under his own banner and as a representative of several other Wilderness based companies and Outdoors schools.

Colin Unsworth

Colin Unsworth

Yurt Maker and Mushroom Spotter

A year ago Colins business Forest Horizons teamed up with Glens Yurts after Glen retired.  Glen is the wizard of the woods, an old school green woodworker and bodger from Lancashire who made yurt making his specialism. After years of studying traditional Mongolian techniques for making yurts he drew upon his knowledge of European green woodworking and “Lancashire-fied” them, making them suitable for our damp climate – Yak sinew doesn’t last long in Lancashire, it would rot. He also wanted to use as many coppiced materials as he could, and what couldn’t be coppiced would be recycled. Ash poles for the roof, copper wire stripped from old vacuum cleaner cord instead of yak sinew, even car seatbelts and buckles are used. Glen’s yurts were being produced until a few years ago when he retired. Glen has teamed up with me and Forest Horizons and the yurts are now being produced in my garden yurt factory in Bolton. The town that was the home of the industrial revolution has returned to cottage industry!
We are currently making a fleet of yurts, 10 x 10 foot, 3 x 12 foot and a 16 footer. These will be used as grid accommodation for weekend foraging courses that will be held with the Woodland Trust in Lancashire in 2020, our pop-up forest schools and as part of a few local community projects where people can come and learn green woodworking and yurt making.
